Hampshire Participation (Hampton Trust) - Update September 2006.

Involving children & young people in their services makes sense and means so much more than providing activities adults think they would enjoy. It is also the best way to evaluate, develop and monitor the quality and success of services delivered to, and activities provided for children and young people.

The UN Convention on the Rights of a Child states that children who are capable of forming opinions should have the right to express them on matters that directly affect them whilst giving due weight to the age and maturity of the child.

This Department for Education and Skills, Building a culture of Participation Handbook (2003) (PDF Document) similarly suggests that 'Acting on children and young people's views has positive outcomes. There is evidence that the participation of young people can lead to improved service development, increases in children and young people's citizenship and social inclusion, and also their wider personal development' .

Hampshire County Council encourages children & young people to get involved in the planning, delivery and review of their services. 'Have your say' on HantsFish is one way that children & young people can feed back their views and influence services in Hampshire.
